Romance
The romance genre is all about love and passion. These books typically have a romantic plot line, with a happy ending. Often, the protagonists are trying to overcome some obstacle to their relationship.
Crime and Mystery
Crime fiction is the genre of fiction that deals with crimes, their detection, criminals, and their motives. It is usually distinguished from mainstream fiction and other genres such as historical fiction or science fiction, by the plots, settings, and characters that become the characteristic of its expression. The typical plot involves a crime that is committed and investigated, while the emphasis is on suspense rather than on action or gore.
Science Fiction and Fantasy
Science fiction is a genre of speculative fiction that typically deals with imaginative and futuristic concepts such as advanced science and technology, space exploration, time travel, parallel universes, and extraterrestrial life. Science fiction often explores the potential consequences of scientific, social, and technological innovations.
Fantasy is a genre of speculative fiction that typically deals with magical or supernatural elements as a main plot element, theme, or setting. Many works within the genre take place in an imaginary world populated by magical creatures.
Historical Fiction
Historical fiction is a genre of literature that recreates a period, often real, in history. It might be fictional or non-fictional. It can center around personalities from history or be about everyday people during a particular time. Generally, it is about a time period with enough distance from the present to be considered history.
Biography and Memoir
Biography and memoir are genres of nonfiction books. A biography is the story of a person’s life, told by someone else. A memoir is the story of a person’s life, told by that person.
Both genres can be either long or short, and they can be either traditional books or ebooks. Traditional books are printed on paper and bound together, while ebooks are digital files that can be read on a computer, tablet, or e-reader.
Both genres can be either factual or fictional. Factual books are based on real people, events, and data, while fictional books are made up by the author. Authors of both factual and fictional books do extensive research to make sure their stories are accurate and believable.
Horror
Horror is a genre of speculative fiction which is intended to, or has the capacity to frighten, scare, disgust, or startle its readers or viewers by inducing feelings of horror and terror. Literary historian J. A. Cuddon defined the horror story as “a piece of fiction in prose of variable length… which shocks, or even frightens the reader, or perhaps induces a feeling of repulsion or loathing”. It creates an eerie and frightening atmosphere. Horror is frequently supernatural, though it might also be non-supernatural. Often the central menace of a work of horror fiction can be interpreted as a metaphor for the larger fears of a society.
Humor
Humor books are designed to make readers laugh. They can be fiction or non-fiction, and often use satire and irony to achieve their goal. Some popular subgenres of humor books include parody, sketch comedy, and dark humor.
Cookbooks
Cookbooks are written with the primary purpose of teaching the reader how to cook. They typically contain a collection of recipes, along with information on ingredients, cooking methods, and sometimes even the history of the dish. Cookbooks can be general, focused on a particular cuisine, or even specific to one particular dish.
Travel
Travel books are a genre of literature that explores the places people visit. They can be either factual or fictional, and they often include a mix of both. Travel books can be guidebooks, which provide information about specific destinations, or they can be narratives, which tell stories about the author’s experiences.
