She worked as a librarian in Yakima, Washington, before moving to New York City to pursue a career as a writer.

What Inspired Beverly Cleary to Write Children’s Literature?
Beverly Cleary is one of the most prolific and best-loved writers of children’s literature. For over 50 years, she has charmed readers with her stories of Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, and other lovable characters growing up in the city of Portland, Oregon. But what inspired Beverly Cleary to write children’s literature in the first place?
It all started with a trip to the library. When she was a young girl, Cleary’s mother used to take her to the public library every Saturday morning. This wasCleary’s favorite part of the week, and she often took out large stacks of books to read at home. On one particular occasion, however, she was disappointed to find that none of the books in the children’s section were about kids like her who lived in urban areas. This made Cleary realize that there was a lack of diversity in children’s literature, and she decided that she wanted to write books that would reflect the lives of all kids.
And so she did. Beverly Cleary went on to write over 40 beloved books for young readers. She has won numerous awards for her work, including the Newbery Medal (for Ramona and Her Father) and the National Book Award (for Dear Mr. Henshaw). Her books continue to be popular with kids and adults alike, proving that good stories are universal.
